Member of a Country Club

Imagine that you were the manager of an exclusive country club. The most elite club in the country and perhaps in the entire world. Membership was restricted to an elite few. In order to be a member you had to be a direct descendant of Jack.

One day as you were working gate control a young man showed up at the gate and asked to be granted membership. When you asked why he should be permitted membership he stated that he was a good guy, the most popular guy in town and if anyone should be allowed membership it should be him. You then asked his name and if he was a descendant of Jack. After admitting he wasn’t he then asked what that had to do with anything and asked who made up such a dumb rule? You simply replied “The owner” and sent him on his way.

Another time someone showed up and insisted they should be allowed membership because their great grand daddy and Jack were close friends. They grew up in the same town, hung out together, went to the same school, liked the same girl and even joined the army together. When you asked his name and checked it against your roster he too was denied membership.

Another time an exquisite and elegant lady drove up to the gate in her expensive sports car and insisted to be granted membership because she was the richest person on earth and had donated millions to good causes such as orphanages, medical clinics in third world countries, paid to have wells dug and crops planted in poor areas, built schools for the children and more. When you asked her name she just huffed about that being an archaic rule and should be updated to keep up with the times. When denied membership she cursed, said some awful things and sped away.

Then a young boy named Sam showed up. He was poor and hungry. He had heard about the country club and hoped they would be kind enough to give him some food and maybe even a job. You asked his name and his mother and father’s names, upon his reply you immediately threw open the gates and welcomed him in and told him you had been expecting him for some time. As it turns out his father, who was deceased, was a direct descendant of Jack and he had adopted Sam into the family. He was granted full membership privileges in the most exclusive country club in the world. He was immediately cleaned up, dressed in fine clothes and sat at the banquet table. It had nothing to do with being rich or poor, being good or bad, being popular or not. It was simply based on being part of Jack’s family. The fact of the matter is that Jack was the sole owner of the country club therefore he had full and complete control over establishing the membership requirements. He alone wrote the rules which were never to be changed.

God owns heaven. Therefore He determines the admission policy. He writes the rulebook. Who do we think we are to make up our own admission guidelines. “Oh, I’ll just be a good person and God will let me in. Or, I’ll attend church and put money in the offering plate and then He’ll let me in for sure. Or, I’ll give lot’s of money to the poor, that will get me in. Or, my daddy was a great preacher so I’m good as gold.” God writes the rules and He said only those who are adopted into His family will be granted citizenship in heaven. We have to be a member of God’s family. The amazing thing is that He will gladly adopt anyone and allow them full membership into heaven for eternity. We simply must believe and make Jesus Christ Lord of our lives. We must believe that He is God incarnate, believe in His sacrificial death on the cross for our sins and His resurrection. He will forgive our sins and welcome us into His family. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6)

So the final question is this: When you die and stand before Almighty God what will He say? Will He throw open the gates of heaven and say ‘Welcome home my child, I’ve been expecting you.’ Or will He say ‘Depart from Me, I never knew you. I offered to adopt you into my family. The price was paid but you refused. You refused to accept me as your Father, come under my roof and live by my rules which are there for your own protection.’ If so you will be denied acceptance into heaven for all eternity and will be cast into outer darkness.

Galatians 4:4-7
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

FILL MY CUP

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Phil 1:6

Imagine a large cup before you. And in that cup are many stones. That cup is your life, the stones are areas of sin and temptation. Within that cup may be the stones of pride, selfishness, covetousness, laziness, lust, anger, and many others. Now pour water into that cup right up to the brim. That is he Holy Spirit in our lives. Often times we pray, asking God to fill us with His Spirit, or at least to fill us more fully. Being filled with the Spirit isn’t as much an act on God’s part (after His initial filling of the believer at salvation) as it is on our part. As we surrender our anger or pride or other areas of sin and it is removed from the cup it opens up more space for God’s spirit within us. As we surrender our greed or lust or pride it makes more room for God’s spirit. This isn’t just a matter of saying to God ‘I surrender all’. Each one of these is it’s own wrestling match. Each one must be dealt with and fought with individually as Jacob wrestled with God so we must wrestle with each area of sin in our lives. Somehow the prayer of desperation is more honest and sincere.

I’ve heard it said that each one of us has as much of God as we want! Wow, think about that. What a sobering statement. When you pray for a closer walk with God or to be more fully filled with His Spirit, is it God that is holding back? Is God saying “No, I don’t want to have a closer relationship with you. Just stay where you are. That’s all of me you get, no more.” I don’t think so. We are the ones limiting God, He isn’t limiting us. So yes, we each have as much of God as we want. John 3:34 tells us that “He gives the Spirit without measure”. If we want more, we need to surrender more. Or are we content where we are in our relationship with God? Are we sufficiently conformed to His image and likeness? If you think so you have a very large boulder of pride in your cup that needs removed. We should never be satisfied with our current position as it relates to our spiritual growth. We should be content in our salvation and adoption but not in our growth and maturity. We need to work on emptying the cup of those sinful areas in our lives so God’s Spirit can more fully occupy our vessel. This is the process of sanctification. Being set apart for God as we continually surrender more of ourselves to God for His purpose. Being conformed to His image and likeness, more like Him and less like the world. As John the Baptist said, “He must increase but I must decrease”. John 3:30. Jim Elliot made the statement “He is no fool who gives up what he can not keep to gain what he can not lose.” Often times we apply this to material things or maybe even a lifestyle. It can just as well be applied to areas of sin our lives that we are reluctant to surrender. Let’s surrender these areas now in preparation for eternity. May God’s word challenge us to surrender so He can continue to fill us more fully.

He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach. Colo 1:22

Reflections from Isaiah

Isaiah 49:6

He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the protected ones of Israel;
I will also make You a light to the nations
So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

I’m so thankful for this verse.  God could have been content offering salvation to Israel.  But in His great love and mercy He reached beyond and made salvation available to all who believe

Isaiah 43:10b-11

Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me.

I, only I, am the Lord,
And there is no savior besides Me.

Isaiah 45:22

Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other.

Isaiah 43:25

“I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake,
And I will not remember your sins.

God’s plan for the salvation of mankind 600 years before Christ. What an amazing God we serve.

God’s Sovereignty – Man’s Responsibility

Does God exercise complete sovereignty over our lives, over our daily actions or does He give us complete freewill?  I hear this question debated quite often among believers.  Some believe my every action is preordained by God and I can’t do anything outside of this preordained plan.  Every time something bad happens you hear ‘Well it must have been God’s will.’  Others believe we have complete control over our lives and God rarely if ever intervenes.  So which is it?  We have to choose one or the other right?  No, we don’t.  It’s both.  To often we assume it has to be one or the other but as Ravi Zacharias explains it’s both.

Ravi Zacharias teaches that the two are held in ‘tension’.  Actually choosing one side or the other is the easy way out.  Holding the two in tension in our lives is the more difficult task.

Phil 2:12b-13  “…work out your salvation with fear and trembling (man’s responsibility or free will) for it is God who is at work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure (God’s sovereignty).”

As is true with most any controversial teaching in the bible, verses can be found to support either side.  Have you ever stopped and ask; Why did God do that?  We can see that many of controversial issues can be scripturally supported on both sides?  God had to know what He was doing when He inspired scripture?  I believe He wants us to find balance.  We don’t have to take sides.  We need to find a balance.  So rather than looking at those verses to support my side I want to look at how this played out in the lives of biblical characters.

I Sam 18 – 30 David had been anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel (God’s sovereign plan) but for 10 years or so he was pursued by Saul who was trying to kill him.  Was God, in His sovereignty, able to stop Saul?  Yes.  Did He?  No.  Did David sit around the palace and let Saul chuck spears at him, depending on God to protect him?  No.  He fled.  For 10 years he fled.  Saul was fighting against God and His plan.  Saul wanted the throne to go to Johnathon. So it was actually God’s battle so why didn’t God take care of it?  We don’t know.  Maybe He had work in David He was trying to accomplish.  What we do know is that David took action and fled from Saul.  Rather than sit around the temple dodging Saul’s spears he took action, he fled.  God’s sovereignty, man’s responsibility.

Neh 4  While the people were building the wall of Jerusalem (God’s sovereign plan) the people of the land began to mock them and threaten them.  The people continued to build the wall but they also carried their spear and sword (man’s responsibility).  They continued to do the work God assigned them but were prepared for the difficulties that came with it.  Was God able to wipe out the people of the land?  Yes.  Did He?  No.  God’s sovereignty, man’s responsibility.

II Cor 11:32-33  Paul was being pursued by the authorities who wanted to kill him.  Did he walk around the city square depending on God to protect him?  No.  He was lowered in a basket out the window down the wall and he fled.  Was God able to deliver Paul?  Yes.  Did He?  No.  (well yes, through the actions or responsibility of men).  Did he take action?   Yes.  God’s sovereignty (that Paul would be His apostle to the Gentiles), man’s responsibility (run).

Stonewall Jackson firmly believed in the sovereignty of God to the point that he would sit on his horse in the middle of the battle fully assured that God would protect him until it was his time.  Was he right?  I don’t know.  It certainly instilled courage in his troops.

Often times when we pray to God we are wanting a miracle.  God miraculously intervening in our lives as He did in the lives of Moses, Elijah, Elisha and Jesus. This is a very small part of scripture.  In the majority of scripture God doesn’t work that way.  He can and occasionally does but most of the time God expects us to take appropriate action rather than sitting around waiting for God to ‘move’ or miraculously intervene.  If we go to extremes we could waste our lives waiting for God’s miracles and be repeatedly disappointed when He doesn’t come through.   If the brakes went out on my car I could go to my prayer closet and pray for God to fix them.  Perhaps He would but it isn’t very likely.  Or I could go to a mechanic and get them fixed.  This is as simple example but it gets the point across.

J Vernon McGee tells the story of a man in one of his churches who told him that he believed so firmly in the sovereignty of God that he could walk right out in the middle of a busy intersection and if it wasn’t his time not a car touch him.  Pastor McGee simply said, Man if you walk out in the middle of that busy intersection it will be your time.

In Phil. 2 we see that Jesus voluntarily laid aside His ‘equality with God’.  He was God, equal with God the Father yet He chose to temporarily lay it aside while living as man.  I believe in the same way God has chosen to give us ‘free will’ over our lives and lay aside His sovereignty as it relates to our daily decisions.  Not total freewill, God is God and is able to intervene whenever and however He wants.  But for the most part I believe we have free will over our daily lives.  It’s not a question of whether God is sovereign, we know He is, it is a question of whether He has chosen to lay it aside and give us at least a limited free will over our lives.

If we don’t have at least some free will over our lives why does He spend so much time in the word encouraging us to obey Him if it is preordained that we won’t?  If God preordains that I commit adultery then how can He require me not to sin?  How can He require me to be holy as He is holy and then require me to sin?

There are places in scripture where God ‘appears’ to be surprised or disappointed in the direction mankind has chosen.  Gen. 6:1-8 when the sons of god sin with the women of the land.  God was sorry He had made man.  Can a sovereign God who has preordained every action of man have regret?   Can God be surprised?

If I don’t believe in freewill, at least limited freewill, then when I pray for God’s direction in regards to a particular decision and I don’t receive direction either way I can become disillusioned.  If I believe in free will then I will pray for God’s wisdom, understanding, discernment and knowledge and use my freewill working within these parameters to proceed to make a wise decision.

CS Lewis illustration uses the illustration of a line drawn on a piece of paper.  One end is our birth, the other end is our death.  In between is our life.  At any point in time we are somewhere on that line.  God is presently in the entire sheet of paper.  He is in our past, our present and our future.  God isn’t bound by time.  God is sovereign and knows the beginning from the end.  He knows how we will choose, (but we don’t), He knows how we will live our lives but allows us the free will to do so.

This isn’t just a theological issue to wrestle with.  It has life changing ramifications.  If I have even limited freewill over my life then I have responsibility.  I become responsible for my actions.  Then I have to ask myself, How am I responsible to act in response to today’s culture?  Is it enough just to pray or do I have a responsibility to get involved, to take action as theses biblical characters did?

So what’s the end result?  I believe God has given us freewill, control over our actions.  He did this when He created Adam.  He gave him the ability to choose good or evil.  He chose evil and now our free will is constantly geared towards evil.  When we come to Christ, we surrender our (free) will to His sovereign will.  We invite Him to work in us to accomplish His sovereign will and purpose.  We place ourselves under His will and strive to live in obedience to His will.  But we still have the freewill to choose to take back what we have surrendered to God and live in sin.  This is why good works are so important.  It shows that we have truly surrendered our free will to God’s sovereign will.  It’s the fruit of our salvation and surrender.  If we continue to express our free will then we are not displaying the fruit of our salvation.

If we take scripture to extremes it usually causes difficulty.  I choose to keep it simple.  For me, it’s not either-or, it’s both.  I’m not going to try to fit God inside a neat tidy little box.  God is to big for that.  He is beyond our comprehension and so are His ways.  It should not surprise us that we can’t fit His teachings into neat tidy little boxes that fit our finite ways of thinking.

God is sovereign.  As King Nebuchadnezzar learned “The Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind”.  I believe God is sovereign but Has chosen to give us freewill in regards to how we live our lives while reserving the right to intervene whenever and however he chooses. This is where I have settled.   This is where I will live my remaining years unless scripturally convinced otherwise.

I Forgive

For the times I’m called a liar

Though they don’t know my heart

For the times I am misunderstood

Tearing relationships apart

**********************

When the pain it cuts so deeply

The hurt it is severe

A decision I am faced with

Where will I go from here?

**********************

It’s natural to follow my instincts

And let anger have its way.

I’d really like to speak my mind

Let them hear all I have to say

**********************

Then I remember Jesus

The price He paid for me

So my sins could be forgiven

He died on Calvary’s tree

**********************

My choice, it has become so clear

It’s something I must do

I simply, promptly must forgive

It’s what I choose to do.

*********************

I forgive

Oh I forgive

As Jesus has forgiven me

So I also forgive you.

Oh I forgive

Yes I forgive

**********************

I’m driving down the highway

And someone flips me off

Called into the bosses office

A coworker set me up

************************

Both gossip and deceitfulness

Cut deep within the soul

Friendships they tear asunder

And leave an empty hole

***********************

Forgiveness isn’t easy

But God’s Spirit dwells in me

Causing the impossible to happen

From my anger I am set free

***********************

I realize other people

Are just as bad as me

So offenses are going to happen

What will my response be?

************************

I forgive

Oh I forgive

As Jesus has forgiven me

So I also forgive you.

Oh I forgive

Yes I forgive

*************************

Jesus is my example

In His steps  I must go

As He did, so I must do

To forgive I must let go.

I forgive

Oh I forgive

As Jesus has forgiven me

So I also forgive you.

Oh I forgive

Yes I forgive

I Give Myself To You

Lord, I give myself to You.  In my eyes it’s not much but it’s all I have.  All my possessions, the gold, the silver, the cash, the house, the barns, cars, gardens… it’s nothing more than children’s trinkets.  It amounts to nothing and will one day be burned up.  The soul of man, his spirit is all that lasts.  And so that is all I truly have to give.  It’s not much.  There is no good in me, my righteousness is as filthy rags, there is none righteous no not one, there is none good but God alone.   But my self is all I have to give, so I give myself to you.

The most amazing thing is… that’s exactly what You want.  You’re not interested in all my trinkets, all my possessions, the things I work and labor and toil so hard to attain.  You want me! Without an ounce of good in me; You want me.  I bring nothing to offer and yet You want me, broken, filthy, a wretched sinner; yet You still want me.  This is such a one sided relationship.  You have everything to offer, you’re spotless, pure, completely holy and righteous, the very definition of good.  You’re loving, compassionate and forgiving; so forgiving.  You’re all wise, all powerful, all knowing, all perfect God.  I have nothing, I bring nothing, I am nothing, I am but a worm.  And yet You want me.

You’re a God who specializes in fixing the broken, in forgiving the trespasser, the sinner, the guilty.  Lord, You take my brokenness, my filthiness and You forgive, You repair and somehow use it for my good, for my growth and development.  Somehow You grow me through it, constantly working to make me more like You.  Lord when I come to You with a contrite heart You transform me by the renewing of my mind.  You cleanse me when I confess my sins and seek Your forgiveness.  God, You gave Your only Son for me, to die in my place, as the payment for my sins through His shed blood on Calvary’s cross. You don’t overlook sins, You don’t excuse sins, You see them and forgive, the price has been paid, it is no longer held against me.  I am free.

Lord, what can I do to repay You?  What can I give in return for all You’ve given me?  How can I possibly even the score?  I am completely indebted to You with no way to repay such a debt.  I think I ‘m beginning to understand why You forgave my sins when I believed, when I trusted in You, when I gave myself to You.  Lord, you want me to live for You; You want me to allow You to live Your life through me.  That’s the one thing I can do for You.  That’s the one thing You ask of me, to live my life as You would if You were in my place, in my culture, my home, my workplace.  That’s why You desire obedience. That’s why You require us to love You with all our hearts and love our neighbor as ourselves.  Lord, help me to do this for You in gratitude for all You’ve done for me.

I am so blessed beyond description.  I went from nothing to being a child of God, adopted into Your family, forgiven, restored to a right relationship with the almighty God who created me.  I have sinned against You, yet You forgave me, cleansed me, made me whole and welcomed me into Your family.

Can you believe it?  He did this for me and He will do it for you if you simply believe and come to Him and give yourself to Him.

the line

This post is actually a short story I wrote some time ago. It is much longer than my typical post but I hope you will take the time to read it. The goal and purpose of this story is to share the gospel through many different aspects of life and to encourage believers to be faithful and to be actively working for the kingdom.

*************************

What if the spiritual realm were visible to us?  What would it be like?  Would it change the way we live?  Would believers and unbelievers go about life any differently?  We perceive the physical realm but the spiritual realm goes unnoticed.  They’re both just as real as the wind.  We can see the results, but the wind itself we can not see.  What if we could see the spiritual realm?  Just imagine… a line that separates good and evil, righteous and unrighteous, holy and unholy; Those who believe on one side, the holy side and those who disbelieve on the other.

God, seated on His throne, several believers at the foot of His throne, worshipping, praying, basking in His glory.  In the distance a believer dangerously walking near the line, gazing across at all the worldly pleasures, his eyes not on Christ but on the enticing things of this world.  God looks on with grave concern.  Across the line one can see unbelievers completely engrossed in the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes and the boastful pride of life( I John 2:16 ).  So involved and distracted that they rarely look up and consider the cross, the meaning of life or the existence of God.  Perhaps afraid to stop for fear of what they may be faced with, the reality of life, eventual death and the thereafter.  In the far distance sits another throne, a very large ornate throne, one covered in jewels, gold and all precious things, a throne where you would expect a very good and powerful king to sit.  However when you gaze upon the one occupying it, its nothing short of utter disappointment as it is occupied by the Prince of the Air, the Prince of this World, the Prince of the Devils.  Between the two, life is played out like pawns on a chess board.  Except that these chess pieces move about freely of their own accord.  And so we begin.

Backslider longingly looking towards the pleasures of the world, walking ever so close to the ‘Line’.  God looks on, lovingly concerned for Backslider’s spiritual condition.  He motions for Hesitant Believer to go and confront Backslider.  But Hesitant Believer doesn’t want to offend him or hurt his feelings by confronting him about the dangerous position he is in.  He doesn’t want to tell him that he’s way off track that he needs to turn his gaze back to Christ and fix his eyes on Him.  He’s afraid of appearing ‘holier than thou’.  Hesitant Believer shakes his head and returns to prayer but it isn’t quite the same now.  The closeness, the intimacy with God isn’t as precious.  There seems to be a bit of separation.  God then motions for Obedient Believer to go and rescue Backslider.  Obedient Believer has also been observing Backslider, being very concerned about his present condition, he has been praying for him to return.  As a result when God motions for him to go and speak with Backslider he immediately jumps up and goes to him.

When Obedient Believer approaches, Backslider initially welcomes him and is happy to have a companion.  But when he begins to confront him about his dangerous situation, Backslider becomes defensive and does his best to assure Obedient Believer that he is in no danger, he is in complete control of the situation and there is nothing to worry about.  There is nothing wrong with looking.  Obedient Believer continues to admonish him, imploring him to turn his gaze back to Christ and fix his eyes on Him.  He prays with him and then sorrowfully departs back to the Father.  When he arrives at the throne the Father immediately calls for him to lift his eyes and gaze upon Him.  He assures him that he is not the one being rejected but rather God himself.  He wraps his arms around him and thanks him for his efforts and his prompt obedience and assures him that he did exactly what was asked of him and must leave the rest to God.

Throughout the entire confrontation, off in the distance a believer could be seen is his lazy boy recliner looking on.  Concerned about Backslider and hoping Obedient Believer could persuade him through the word of God to return but never getting out of his lazy boy to come along side of Obedient Believer.  Although he did say a prayer for him he just couldn’t quite get up and participate.

Meanwhile after being instructed by God to go and witness to the lost, Persecuted Believer promptly obeys and is proclaiming the word of God to several unreceptive and somewhat hostile lost souls.  While he is sharing with them concerning their lost condition and their need for Christ they are jeering, mocking and laughing at him.  Persecuted Believer continues to share the word of God with them out of obedience to God and his love for the lost, imploring them to believe.  In the midst of this a large shadow is seen falling across them and everyone stops to see what is happening.  It is then that they realize that Satan himself is standing and motioning for the lost souls to attack.  Like hungry lions pursuing their prey they charge Persecuted Believer, grab him, drag him down and begin to beat him mercilessly.  Persecuted Believer, in spite of the beating, looks to the throne of God and sees him standing, lovingly watching with such concern and compassion that it is enough for Persecuted Believer to endure anything they could do to him.   When they stop, they believe him to be dead and proudly return to Satan to seek his approval and praise.

It is then that the shadow begins to retreat as it is overtaken by a great and stunning light as God is seen approaching.  Everything stops as if frozen in time while God walks over, picks up Persecuted Believer and carries him back to the throne.  He then lays him down, pulls out a basin and a towel and proceeds to clean his wounds, tenderly washing each one.  After some time Persecuted Believer is revived and sits up but rather than hearing those words he longed to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matt25:21).  He hears God say to him “Your time has not yet come.  Return and continue to labor.  “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (Matt 9:37).  After some time of resting and recovering both spiritually and physically Persecuted Believer rises and returns.

Throughout this entire episode Lazy Boy Believer is on the edge of his chair, completely shocked by the brutal beating of Persecuted Believer.  He is crying out at the atrocity but can’t seem to pry himself out of his chair to help, to pray, to get involved.  He is overjoyed when he sees God carry him to the throne and to see him recover.  He then feels relieved and somewhat justified in his actions… or the lack thereof.

Meanwhile Encourager notices Fearful Believer cowering in the corner after seeing the beating of Persecuted Believer.  He didn’t know that following Christ would cost him.  He didn’t know he would have to pay a price.  Encourager, in his loving gentle way, proceeds to explain that living life on the holy side of the line doesn’t mean it is any easier than before.  It is not a bed of roses for those who have believed.  The rain falls on the just and the unjust (Matt 5:45).  Fearful then asks why the unholy in many ways have a very soft and easy life full of all sorts of pleasures while the holy have trials and tribulations.  Encourager explains to him that it is not the unholy that need the testing of their faith (James 1:3).  It is not the unholy who need to be chastised (Rev 3:19).  It is not the unholy who need to be refined by fire (Zec 13:9).  God out of His great love for us desires to perfect us, to remove the dross and prepare us for eternity.   Encourager invites Fearful to stay with him so he can teach him and encourage him that he may be strengthened in the inner man through God’s Holy Spirit.  (Eph. 3:16)

Following the violent beating of Persecuted Believer, a lost soul could be seen approaching the Line and peering across, wondering, thinking, contemplating life, death and the existence of God.  Hesitant Believer hears God call for him to go and witness to this lost and seeking soul.  But with the beating of Persecuted Believer fresh in his mind he tells God that he needs more time in prayer. He’s not quite ready yet.  Laymen then sees God motion for him to go.  He also has just observed the beating that Persecuted Believer received but does as his Master bids him and approaches the Line.  He is pleasantly surprised as he asks Inquirer if would like to cross the ‘Line’?  The lost soul is eager to cross and pleads with Layman to tell him what he must do to cross over.  He explains that he has tried to be as good as he could but still finds himself on the wrong side of the line.  He has tried giving large sums of money to the poor and various charitable organizations all promising him that he would cross over only to find out that he is still on the wrong side.    He has attended all sorts of religious meetings and joined several groups all promising him that he would make it to the other side only to find it all a lie.  He can see people on the holy side and is confident that there has to be a way but he can’t seem to find it.  Layman proceeds to explain to him that there is nothing he can do in his own strength to cross over.  He is absolutely helpless.  He can’t work his way over, he can’t buy his way over and he can join every religious group out there but still he will not cross over.  There is only one way.  He must believe in Jesus Christ.  He tells him that ‘there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ ( Acts 4:12 ) Layman asks him if would like to accept Christ as his Lord and Savior.  Inquirer can’t believe that it is so simple.  He can’t believe that it is simply through believing in Christ.  It doesn’t seem right.  After all he has been through he is somewhat conditioned into believing that he has to do something, that he has to clean himself up, that he must show himself worthy.  But on the other hand he has tried all those things and they have gotten him nowhere.  Inquirer chooses to believe the simple gospel message and trust in Christ for his salvation.  As they pray together the line retreats around them and as the Lost Soul opens his eyes and finds himself on the righteous side of the line he can’t help but cry out in praise to God and rushes to the throne where he kneels with his face to the ground and continues in praise and thanksgiving to God.  All heaven rejoices.

Hesitant Believer then realizes that God was trying to train him by giving him an opportunity to witness to a very receptive lost soul.  He then regrets his disobedience and the missed opportunity to lead a seeking soul to Christ and gain eternal rewards.  He confesses his sin of disobedience and vows to obey next time.

By now Persecuted Believer has recovered and returned to active service for the Lord.  The first thing God asks of him is to return and witness to those lost souls who mercilessly beat him and left him for dead.  As Persecuted Believer looks steadfastly into the eyes of God he finds strength, comfort, love and assurance.  He then turns and approaches the line.  Lazy Boy Believer can’t believe he is returning to those who violently beat him and calls out for him to stop.  He can’t understand why he would return to face those who treated him so cruelly.  But Persecuted Believer remains focused, resolved to obey his master.  He recalls a time in his Master’s life when he had to tell one of His disciples “ get behind me Satan”, when he was tempted to disobey His Father.  As the lost souls see him approach they look back to Satan and see him motioning for them to attack.  As they begin their charge, one of them runs ahead and suddenly turns and stops the others.  He approaches Persecuted Believer and asks him if what he saying is really true?  He listens as he explains how he can cross over the Line.  After it is all explained to him he then feels ashamed and insists that he can’t possibly cross over because of the horrible things he has done.  Persecuted Believer explains to him that Jesus died for all men and that he forgave those who cried out for his crucifixion.  If he could forgive them he can forgive you.  Lost Soul was completely overwhelmed by the grace, mercy and love of God.  To think that God could and would forgive him was more than he could comprehend.  Lost Soul eagerly prays with Persecuted Believer.  When he opens his eyes he finds himself on the righteous side of the “Line”.  He can’t believe how light and clean and new he feels.  He breaks out in songs of praise to God.

Lazy Boy Believer then feels ashamed for his lack of faith and shies away from looking at God.

There are many very near the line that go by the name Deceived, who live in very nice neighborhoods, full of nice people who do such nice things and attend lovely little churches.  These church goers are very kind and polite, contribute to charities and help those who are down on their luck.  By all appearances you would think that this lovely little neighborhood was on the righteous side but herein lies the deception.  Satan is the great deceiver and this is his masterpiece.  Satanic camouflage!  It is in this area that many churches exist.  Once churches on fire for Christ, they have long since lost the faith, being deceived, they where led astray (II Peter 2:1-3).  They allowed false teachers to sway the church in the wrong direction and are now on the dark side.  Deceived believes he is on the righteous side.  He believes he knows the way.  He thinks he is good enough to get into heaven.  Both Persecuted Believer and Laymen have tried to tell him that there is only one way and it is through the blood of Jesus Christ.  They have told him that we are saved “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,” (Titus 3:5) They have told him that Jesus shed His blood; He died to redeem us, to buy us back from the marketplace of sin.  He paid the price for us.  But Deceived trusts in his church, his works, his niceness, his goodness to get him to heaven.  Ultimately, he believes his way is a better way than God’s way.  Persecuted Believer tells Deceived that if God created eternal life and heaven, doesn’t it make sense that He alone would determine how to get there?  Who are we to make up our own way that has no basis in reality?  He wrote the rule book.  Heaven belongs to God and God says that Jesus Christ is the only way.  He said ‘I am the way the truth and the life no man comes to the Father but by me.’ ( John 14:6 )  These churches are as Jesus said ‘white-washed tombs’.  They look good on the outside but are full of dead mans bones on the inside. ( Matt 23:27 )

From where he sits Lazy Boy Believer can see one wandering through life without aim or purpose.  He has no direction or vision; in danger of perishing.  He goes by the name of Drifter.  He seems to be completely unaware of the precarious position he is in.  He seems to drift through life without a care in the world.  Lazy Boy Believer has considered getting up and talking with him about his precarious position but has decided that maybe he’ll do it tomorrow.  Meanwhile Christian has also been carefully observing Drifter and is very concerned.  He senses God’s prompting and goes and warns Drifter that he needs to wake up and take life more seriously.  He warns him that the line is not straight or stationary.  He informs him that it has twists and turns and sharp right angles to trip up the unsuspecting and yes it moves.  Rather like a slithering serpent.  That’s why it is so dangerous to live so close to the line always gazing over to the worldly side.  Drifter is surprised and unbelieving.  Intentional Believer continues to warn him that when one lives so close to the line, walking along and peering over at the things of the world, one does not notice when the line takes a sudden change of course and almost without knowing it, the line is crossed.  Not a sudden falling away but rather a drifting.

God has many kingdom workers, each with different gifts and abilities.  In fact all who live on the holy side are kingdom workers.  One who is especially knowledgeable in God’s word is Proclaimer of Truth.  He is observing a seriously disturbing site.  One can be seen boldly teaching everyone he comes in contact with that there is no holy side.  It is all a deception, a mere illusion.  He goes by the name of Philosopher and is a very proud and haughty man.  He has studied all the various philosophies known to man and is convinced of his beliefs.  He boldly teaches that there is no afterlife, when we die it all ends.  Proclaimer has been conversing with him telling him that he is wrong.  There is a spiritual realm where God dwells and if we don’t make peace with God in this life then we will dwell in utter darkness and torment the rest of eternity.  Philosopher scoffs at Proclaimer and refuses to believe him.  Proclaimer explains to him that truth does not change.  He then attempts to convince him saying, “If I choose to believe that gravity does not exist and step off the rim of the Grand Canyon what happens?  Does gravity still exist?  It most certainly does.  My denial of the truth does not nullify the truth!  My refusal of the truth does not make the truth non existent.  In the end I find out truth does exist and I only hurt myself in my refusal to believe it.  If something is true, it is true regardless of my response to it.  If truth exists then I must seek it out and adjust my life around it.  Truth doesn’t change to suit me, I must change to respond to truth.  Gravity exists and if I know what is good for me I must change my life to respond to that truth.  One thing is sure my beliefs will change, I will believe in gravity.  The only question is when?  Will I believe before it’s too late or will I believe on my way to the bottom?   Will I believe in God before it is too late or will I wait until I stand in judgment before Christ?  Jesus said “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me..” ( Rev 3:20 ) Philosopher appears to consider his words momentarily but then perceives that he is showing weakness and quickly shrugs it off and holds fast to his beliefs or rather unbelief.  His pride seems to have won the day.

There is another well educated and intelligent man that goes by the name of Naturalist. He has spent his entire life studying the sciences and the natural world.  He is amazed at how everything functions so well together and how all of life and the world itself are so intertwined.  He recognizes cohesiveness in nature, an interdependency and realizes that there must be a central unifying element that is responsible for the whole of nature but assumes it to be ‘Mother Nature’ herself.  He has been taught throughout his entire life that it all came into being through the evolutionary process and that is what holds it all together.

Encourager decides it is time to speak to Naturalist and tell him about the one who created it all.  As he begins to approach Naturalist he sees Lazy Boy Believer in his chair watching.  Encourager senses God’s prompting and invites him to go along.  It took some persuasion but in the end he was moved by the kindness of Encourager and gets up out of his chair and tags along even though he felt very nervous and hesitant.  When they greet Naturalist he is busy observing a chrysalis that is in the process of opening and watching as a beautiful butterfly emerges.  They initially asked many questions about it and learned much from him.

Encourager then begins to explain to him that this whole world was created by God and is held together by Him.   He is the central theme through all of nature.  He brought it all into existence from nothing.  He is the one behind all the questions evolution can’t answer.  He then asks him who taught the birds to sing, the flowers to bloom and the stars to shine?  Who placed the sun the exact distance from the earth to make it a planet suitable for life?  Who created the vast diversity of life on the coral reef and made it incredibly beautiful and all interdependent on the other?  Who created our eyes that permit us to sense the presence of objects miles away?  Who gave us a mind capable of processing, reasoning and understanding?  It is too incredible to have happened by chance.  Naturalist seems to ponder these questions momentarily but then simply responds ‘Isn’t evolution an amazing thing’?

Well Lazy Boy Believer forgets himself and begins to explain that Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth and lived among us as a servant of men, lowly and poor.  But similar to the caterpillar crawling into its cocoon Jesus died and was buried and was resurrected the third day as the victorious Son of God.  He died to pay the penalty of death we each have as sinners separated from God.  If we believe in Him as our savoir He will forgive our sins and we will be born again just as that butterfly.  Naturalist admits that he has never heard this before and will need time to consider it.  It does seem to provide answers to many questions that science can’t.  After talking with him further Lazy Boy Believer and Encourager depart thankful that God is working in Naturalist to open his eyes to the truth.  Encourager then commends Lazy Boy Believer for being obedient to God and coming along.  He was able to reach Naturalist when he wasn’t.  Encourager then gives him a new name of Courageous Witness.  He never returns to his chair but remains active in the work of the Lord.

After seeing Lazy Boy Believer get up out of his chair and get involved in the work of the Lord, Hesitant Believer is encouraged to do the same.  If God is faithful in helping him, surely He would do the same for himself.  Hesitant Believer then senses God directing his attention to one named Indecisive.  He prays for courage and God’s guidance and wisdom and then begins talking with Indecisive concerning the truth and believing in Christ for his salvation.  Indecisive appears to believe everything he is telling him, that God became man in the person of Jesus Christ, that he lived a sinless life on this earth and died in our place to pay the penalty for our sin.  He seems to agree that He rose from the dead, conquering sin and death and is now seated at the right hand of God the Father.  Indecisive also realizes that Jesus is offering him salvation from his sins if he simply believes, if he trusts in Christ for salvation.  However Indecisive can’t seem to bring himself to make the commitment and place his trust in Jesus Christ.  Hesitant Believer implores him to believe, telling him that ‘today is the day of salva… ‘

At that very instant Hesitant Believer was snatched away!  Raptured!  It’s too late!  There is no more time.  Indecisive is shocked and horrified.  He knows what happened.  He knows it is too late.  He knows what the future holds and he’s terrified!  The great tribulation has come!

The End… has begun!

MEALTIME

Mealtime should be a time when we stop from our busy-ness, from our toil and labor and enjoy the fellowship of friends and family.  They’re the reason we’re working and striving anyhow.  It’s easy to become distracted and think we’re working simply to pay the bills.  But that’s the superficial reason.  We’re actually working to provide our families with the services that we consider necessary in life and hopefully a few luxuries as well.  Mealtime should be a respite, a momentary lapse from our work to refocus, to enjoy the relationships God has blessed us with.  Relationships are what’s important in life.

Throughout the Old Testament when God wanted the Israelites to remember Him or the mighty deeds He performed He often did it by instituting a feast or having them share a meal together.   Passover is a prime example.  After miraculously delivering the Israelites from Egypt He commanded them to establish a Passover ceremony to always remember Him and the mighty deeds He had performed on their behalf.  Passover includes sharing a meal together.  (Exodus 12)

The last time Jesus was with His disciples before His crucifixion He intentionally had a meal together with them and instituted the ritual of communion. Our remembrance of Jesus death and resurrection is through the last supper – eating together.  (Luke 22:14-23)

One of my favorite verses on this topic is Rev 3:20 which says “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

Here we see that the end result of accepting Christ is dining together with Christ Himself. What an honor and privilege.  We can enjoy that fellowship with Christ through the Holy Spirit now.  When we believe, Christ enters in and dines with us.

But let’s not forget the meal all believers are looking forward to, the marriage supper of the Lamb.  That will be a feast and celebration beyond all that we can imagine.  That will be the celebration of all time, the greatest celebration that has ever been or ever will be and we will be sharing a meal together.

Rev 19:9  …”Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”

Let’s be sure to remember the most important of all relationships, the relationship with our Lord and Savior.  We do this by coming to Him in prayer.  From the very beginning Christians have paused for prayer before partaking in a meal.  There are several reasons for this.

1.  The example of Jesus.

Before the feeding of the 5000 he gave thanks.

Matt 14:19  Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,

At the last supper He blessed the food before they ate.

Matt 26:26  While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

We follow Jesus’ example.

2.  The scriptures command us to be thankful.

I Thes 5:8 says “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

When we think of the road to depravity described in Romans 1 we don’t think about unthankfulness.  We think about rebellion, sexual perversion, idol worship, deliberate turning away from God and indulging in the pleasures of this world.

Romans 1:21  For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Failing to give thanks is the second step in the depravity of man.  It seems like such a little thing but life is made up of little things; little decisions, little compromises, little indulgences, little sins.

If we’re faithful in the little things that makes it possible to be faithful in the bigger things.

3.  As a reminder.

God constantly sets up reminders for His people.  He wants us always to remember Him and teach our children to remember Him.  Think about the passover, the OT feasts, communion, all of these are reminders.  Giving thanks before each meal helps us remember where our food comes from, it helps us remember that Jehovah-Jirah is our provider.  It helps us to honor Him as our God.

Deut 8:11-14 tells us to be cautious not to forget our God after He blesses us with abundance and we have eaten and are satisfied.  Continually giving thanks from our hearts helps keep us aware that He is our provider.

11 “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

4.  It turns our hearts towards God.  Often times we begin our day with bible reading and prayer and then get started on our days work.  Our mind is involved in and focused on our work.  It becomes difficult to think about God and scripture when our mind is on our work.  But then God makes us hungry. God uses our physical craving for food to turn our hearts back towards Him.  He causes us to stop our busy day, several times each day, and think about Him and His care for us, His provision and His many blessings for us.  God has wired us to come to Him in prayer several times throughout the day.  To have a brief time of fellowship with Him and our family each day, several times each day.  Let’s not rush through it or skip it but rather enjoy the moments of fellowship with our God.

So what’s appropriate?  I’m sure many of us have experienced exceedingly long prayers before a meal, hoping the food wouldn’t get cold before we were able to eat it.  But on the other end many skip prayer altogether.  I’m not saying we should have a prayer meeting before each meal but we shouldn’t blow it off either.  I would suggest a brief time of fellowship with our God.  A time of turning our hearts and minds to Christ.  As we fellowship with each other at mealtime let’s remember to include God.  He’s there waiting and longing to be included.

Does life have any Value or Purpose?

This is a question that nearly everyone asks on some level.  Some verbalize it while others simply live with a nagging emptiness deep within their soul.  This is a normal question that we should all ask ourselves.  Unfortunately our culture not only suppresses the question but also doesn’t provide any meaningful answers.  In fact they teach quite the opposite.  Throughout a students formative years and all through college, at all levels, students are taught that they are nothing more than a freak accident of nature, a product of evolutionary chance, nothing more than a high level animal.  There certainly isn’t any value or purpose to be found there.  With this teaching being so prevalent in our schools it’s no wonder our suicide rate is so high.  It’s no wonder drug abuse is rampant.  It’s no wonder we have mass shootings.  If I am no more than an animal and have no hope of life after death then I better take all I can while I can.   Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.

However, if there is life after death then that changes everything.  The bible teaches that our lives have enormous value and purpose.  In the first two chapters of the first book of the bible it teaches that we are created by God, in the very image and likeness of God.

Gen 1:26

Then God said, “let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;”

Gen. 2:7

…the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

That is clearly a game changer.  It implies of course that God has a reason for creating us, we exist for a purpose.  An almighty God would not create beings in His own image and likeness without intentionality, without purpose.

In the 3rd chapter of Genesis we see a hint of God’s purpose in creating us.

Gen. 3:8-9

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day … the Lord God called to man, “Where are you?”

This verse tells us something about mans relationship with God back when man lived in perfect harmony with God.

We see that God came down from heaven to walk in the garden with Adam & Eve. In verse 9 God calls out to Adam, “Where are you?”  It implies that God came down to the garden specifically to be with Adam, to fellowship with Adam.   This verse gives us a glimpse of God’s purpose for us, which is to share a relationship with God; to experience communion and fellowship with God.   God and Adam walked and talked with each other in the garden.   All through the bible we see God reaching out to man.  He desires that we become His people and He becomes our God.  The greatest commandment of all says that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength (Matt 22:32-40).  This is the central purpose for mankind.  The very purpose of life itself.  Imagine that, our God given purpose in life is to share a relationship with God Himself, the almighty, all knowing, loving God.  How amazing is that?  That gives life an incredible purpose.

But when God created man, He gave him ‘free will’.  He gave him the ability to choose to love Him or to choose not to.  And man chose not to.  Man sinned against God and broke that relationship.  Man rebelled against God and walked out on Him and has been alienated from God ever since.

The bible tells us that the result of sin is death, spiritual as well as physical.

Gen. 3:19

By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

This was man’s death sentence for disobeying God.

Rom. 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, …

As a result of sin we’re all born spiritually dead with no way to give life to our souls.  But God took action to remedy that situation.  He provided a way to restore that broken relationship.

In the New Testament God sent His only Son to be born into the human race, to become one of us, to become one of His created.  He lived among us, teaching us what God expects and desires of us.  Teaching us how to be in relationship with Him.  After three years of public ministry, Jesus accomplished His ultimate reason for becoming man.

We have seen that sin requires death.  That’s an unchangeable law of scripture.  If we die for our sins then there is no hope of eternal life, no hope of life after death.  But if someone else were to die for us, to pay our death sentence, then we could have the hope of eternal life.  But that would have to be someone without sin, an innocent person dying for the guilty.  Jesus, being God, was conceived of a virgin by the Holy Spirit, and therefore was born without sin.  He lived His entire life without sin and then died in our place, for our sins.  He was executed for us.

Rom 5:6

For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly.

Rom. 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this:  While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

This is God’s provision.  Sin requires death.  Jesus died in our place to pay the penalty for our sins.  He was buried but rose from the dead and ascended into heaven with God the Father.  Jesus was victorious.  Being the Son of God, the creator of life, death could not hold Him.  He rose from the dead and broke the chains of death.  He conquered both sin and death.

I Cor. 15:3-8(b)

… Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that He appeared to Peter, and then to the twelve.  After that He appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time…

Think about that, the Son of God loves you enough to die for you.  Is there any higher price that could possibly be paid?  You have been bought with the very life of God.  You have tremendous value.

I Peter 1:18-19

Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver and gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Speaking of Jesus Christ,

Revelation 5:9-10 says, “Worthy are you to take the book and to break its seals for you were slain and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.  You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God and they will reign upon the earth.”

We are purchased with the blood of Christ.

But you have a part in this as well.  You have to believe.  You have to accept the payment Jesus Christ has paid for your soul.  You have to commit your life to Him.  He gave His life for you.  Now He wants you to give your life to Him.  He wants to be your Lord and God.

John 3:16 says   For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life

Phil 3:20 says “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior the Lord Jesus Christ;”

I John 5:11-12 says “And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son.  He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.”

I John 2:25 “This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.”

The price has been paid.  The gift of eternal life is being offered.  Our part is to accept the gift by believing in Jesus Christ, that He is God, that He died for your sins and rose from the dead.  If we truly believe and accept Him as Lord of our lives we can have everlasting life.  You can do this right now through prayer.  He will give your life eternal value.

The Worlds Biggest Pervert

Satan has taken every aspect of our lives, that which God created perfect and holy, and has perverted it.

He has taken our enjoyment of food and perverted it in gluttony and eating disorders.

He has taken our need for meaningful work and perverted it in both laziness and work addiction.

He has taken our need for money and perverted it with greed.

He has taken our need for friendship and replaced it with loneliness.

He has taken our God given generosity and replaced it with self-centeredness.

He has taken marriage blessed by God and has replaced it with divorce and brokenness.

He has taken the family unit so critical for raising children and replaced it single parent homes.

He has taken our God given desire for sex and perverted it in countless ways.

He has taken our love for life and has given us a culture of death.

He has taken our God given meaning, value and purpose for life and replaced it with… nothing; emptiness, meaninglessness and hopelessness. The very purpose of life, at the core of our being, he has stripped it away to the point that people kill themselves, in utter despair they take their own lives and discard them, no better than garbage.  They destroy the very life God gave them.  Suicide has to be Satan’s ultimate perversion, his highest accomplishment.  His ultimate revenge against God.

God has a purpose for your life.  He gives life meaning and value.  Turn to God.  Give your life to him.  He will transform you.  He will reverse everything Satan has perverted.  He will give you new life.
